Yesterday I hit a reasonably strange problem, which took me quite some time to resolve, long enough, in fact, to prompt me to post this in the hope that anyone else encountering can avoid the circuitous route I took!

Symptom:

Windows 7 system unable to browse local domain resources (file shares etc) but access to Internet was fine. Was able to ping all local servers and DNS functioned correctly. Decided to remove system from domain and re-add. Upon attempt to re-add process was as normal, including request for domain administrator username & password, but despite using correct credentials, domain join would fail with message:

“The following error has occured when trying to join the “xyz” domain:
network path not found.”

Tried (try in order below as one of these may fix for you);
i) Checked that other Windows 7 systems could leave & rejoin domain. (They could, so it was clearly a machine specific issue)
ii) Reboot, followed by Disabling & Enabling NIC, followed by reboot.
iii) Check that current network is set to “Work” type /category.
iv) Disabling Windows Firewall (or other firewalls) temporarily.
v) Using another NIC (in this case WiFi).
vi) “Removing” NIC from Device Manager & rebooting.
vii) Removing system’s old account from Active Directory “Computers” container.
viii) Reinstalling TCP/IP stack. (netsh int ip reset in command prompt as admin)
ix) Remove & re-add “Client for Microsoft Networks” Client.

None of these fixed it for me and so was just considering a re-install, however I first tried the following, which did work!

Solution:

Remove ALL “Clients” / “Services” / “Protocols” from NIC (except IP4 & IP6 which are non-removable and would have been fixed by step “viii”, above, if they were the problem), reboot and re-add them. (this included, in our case, a “minimum working set” of; “Client for Microsoft Networks”, “Link-Layer Topology Discoverer Responder” & “Link-Layer Topology Discoverer Mapper I/O Driver”). Following their removal, rebooting & re-addition the system was able to join to domain as normal!
Hope this helps someone avoid my pain and as ever, feedback is appreciated on additional options / extra steps etc!

When using Windows 7, if you receive a message in the bottom right of the desktop stating that “You are logged into a Temporary Profile.” this indicates that your user profile is corrupt. It also means that the system will not retain any profile changes / files created by this user until the problem is fixed. But never fear! There is a, relatively, simple solution;

1. Logout & login as a different / your “backup” user.
(If you don’t have a backup account please make one! You should always have one! It should be an “administrator” level account with a strong password)

2. Navigate to the “C:\Users” and backup / copy the folder with your problematic user profile’s name.
(If it does not exist then skip this step)

3. Delete the TEMP folder in this same directory.

4. Open “Control Panel” -> User Accounts ->User Accounts -> Manage User Accounts” & delete the problematic account.

5. Open “regedit” (via the “Search / Run” box of the start menu). & navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList”, check each sub folder to find which one belongs to the problematic user profile (via inspection fo the “ProfileImagePath” key) and delete the relevant folder.

6. Restart your system.

7. Login as your backup user again & re-create the problematic user from scratch.

8. Restart your system and login as your new version of your, now fully functioning, user!

(NOTE: You can now look through the “backed-up” copy of your old user profile folder, if you were able to make one in step 2, and copy anything you want to keep from it onto your new “clean” user profile. Remember to look through it with hidden files & folders visible; Organise -> Folder & search options -> View -> Show hidden files, folders & drives ).

Following some serious research into the leading players in the enterprise anti-virus market I am happy to reveal that my simple conclusion is that you should only really be considering either Kaspersky or G-Data.

These two products / product ranges are the ONLY two which satisfy the minimum criteria I would require of an anti-virus product at this time.

1. Highest available, independently tested, rating for both “pro-active” & “on-demand” virus detection & removal, with lowest available “false-positives”.
2. Solid, reliable, company with assets to support it long term.
3. An intuitive & practical set of deployment & maintenace tools.
4. Industry leading price point across client, server & management tool licensing.

So it really is that easy! If you are not using one of these products in your corporate environment then you should be asking questions. These are the two clear “best” options, for enterprise anti-virus, world-wide.

Yesterday McAfee released an update (DAT No 5958) which incorrectly identified a vital Windows XP system file (svchost.exe) as a virus and deleted it, (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8636985.stm) resulting in some or all of the following symptoms, amongst others;

1. Repeated rebooting of the system.

2. Loss of Windows “Theme” / “Look & Feel”.

3. Missing “Taskbar”.

4. Inability to use some USB devices.

5. Inability to connect to LAN / WAN / Internet. (Yes, this means no clever network wide solution! )

6. Inability to Copy & Paste. (To make things even harder!)

http://vil.nai.com/vil/5958_false.htm

Having tried McAfee’s suggestions and various other options I’ve found the following to be the quickest, simplest, cleanest fix, which also leaves you with the very latest (non-hazardous!) virus definitions installed!;
(This assumes you have access to another, working, computer, which you clearly do or you wouldn’t be reading this!)

1. Download http://download.nai.com/products/licensed/superdat/english/intel/5959xdat.exe (65MB)

2. Copy this file to a CD (a USB stick MAY work if your problem system already has drivers for it). If this system also has Windows XP on it copy the “svchost.exe” from inside “c:\WINDOWS\system32\” (14KB) to the CD as well. Keep both files in the “root” of the CD.

3. Copy the file onto the problem system & then install it. You will likely have to copy the file to the problem system using a command rather than cut and paste… sigh… “copy e:\5959xdat.exe c:\5959xdat.exe” (where “e” is the drive letter of your CD / DVD / USB drive) followed by “c:\5959xdat.exe” would work just fine.

4. After install, don’t shutdown as advised, you need to restore your original svchost.exe file first, to do this either;

i) Restore it from McAfee’s “Quarantine”:
a) Launch the VirusScan Console (Click Start, Programs, McAfee, VirusScan Console).
(If you are unable to launch the VirusScan Console, click Start -> Run & type the command below (including quotes) and click OK: “C:\program files\mcafee\virusscan enterprise\mcconsol.exe” /standalone
b) Double-click Quarantine Manager Policy, then click the Manager tab.
c) Right-click the detection and select Restore.

ii) Copy it from another location:
a) Open a Command Prompt, by typing “cmd” and pressing Enter, either via going to Start -> Run or by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete selecting Task Manager (if necessary) and then File -> New Task (Run).
b) Type: copy c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\svchost.exe c:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe and then hit Enter.
(If that doesn’t work then try option “c)” directly below)
c) Type: copy c:\windows\system32\dllcache\svchost.exe c:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe and then hit Enter.
(If that doesn’t work either then try option “d)” directly below.)
d) Copy svchost.exe from C:\WINDOWS\system32 on a similar unaffected system (i.e. they are both XP!) to C:\WINDOWS\system32 on the affected system. You may need to use the copy command again, as above, on the problem system, in which case it would look something like: copy e:\svchost.exe c:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe (where “e” is the drive letter of your CD / DVD / USB drive) on the problem system.

5. Restart the system and you should be all clear to continue computing as normal!

Good luck all!

(NOTE: If 65MB is a bit too much to stomach, you can replace steps 1 & 3 above with;
1. Download: http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/wecorl/extra.dat (21.5KB)
2. Repeat 2. as above, but using the “extra.dat” file.
3. Copy it to “c:/program files/common files/mcafee/engine” of the problem system (i.e. using something like: copy e:\extra.dat “c:\program files\common files\mcafee\engine\extra.dat” (where “e” is the drive letter of your CD / DVD / USB drive)
